An economic collapse means that the economy has hit the depression levels leading to civil unrest and increased poverty levels. Sometimes there is also a breakdown of law and order. A lot of negative things can creep up, and if people are not prepared for it, it could have some dire consequences.
Ever thought of what could happen in the case of an economic collapse?
A lot of things could go wrong like:
- Debit cards would get suspended.
- Credit cards could get declined.
- Due to high gas prices, trucks cold stop moving.
- Street rooting could increase alarmingly.
It is for this reason that everyone needs to be prepared in case an economic collapse was to happen in the future. The following are essential things that you should keep in mind while preparing for an economic collapse:
Prepare your finances
Get an emergency fund in place. If the economy had to collapse, it is most likely that you could lose your job. For those who survive paycheck to paycheck, it could mean disaster to them. That is why you need an emergency fund. Separate your emergency fund from your checking account to avoid temptations of using the money. The money will also lose value so stock commodities that you can use to make barter trade like precious metals.
Have enough cash on hand
It could take you sometime before you can access money from either savings account or the emergency fund. Get an additional source of income; it could be starting a home business to supplement your income. Ensure you clear all your debts.
You need to stock the essentials to last throughout the period. Water supply could get halted and as you need clean water, make sure to get big containers to store water in. Have at least a gallon for each to last 3-7 days. Also, remember water for your pets. In a situation where you cannot access clean water, sanitize the available water by boiling it and then filtering before storing it in a clean container.
You need to stock non-perishable food and those that don’t need refrigeration in case of a power outage. Get dried food, canned meat, powdered milk and dried fruits, soups, honey coffee and tea and some spaghetti. Remember to stock baby food and include pet food if you have pets. Always have a can opener with you.
Get nonfood supplies
These are things you need daily like soap, sanitary towels, toothbrushes, diapers, underwear, and socks.
Having a garden will help you a lot in case of a crisis. You will have your own supply of fresh food and save on shopping for groceries. Grow vegetables that are easy to grow and mature fast.
Have an emergency kit
This includes household items to you will need in case of an emergency. Buy them beforehand. Have them stocked in an easy to carry case in case you need to evacuate.
- Have a disinfectant.
- Copies of important documents like property deed, birth certificates, passports and insurance policies.
- Make a list of emergency and family contact numbers.
- Have a map, flashlight, blankets, and matches, a set of extra car keys, batteries, mobile phone and extra chargers.
- Remember baby and pet supplies.
Get first aid supplies
You can either buy a fully equipped kit or put one together. Always ensure that you include personal medications and always check the kit to ensure that no supply has been used by the family members. Keep an eye on the expiry dates and replace the expired supplies.
• Have a first aid manual at hand together with your kit.
• Include the necessities like gauze, bandages, gloves latex and non –latex, sterile cotton balls and dressings.
• Don’t forget scissors, tweezers, safety pins, a thermometer and instant cold packs.
Secure your home
Cases of economic collapse lead to looting on the streets, and you should ensure that you are secure in your own home. Secure your house by erecting a fence around it. You might also decide to get a guard dog. Get an extra source of lighting either solar or an underground generator.
Have Self-Defense Tools
These could range from pepper spray, and hand held stun guns, Taser devices or an alarm. You can also get yourself a firearm or bow and arrows and ensure you know how to use them.
Always make sure that everyone in your family is aware of the situation and well prepared. Train them on survival skills especially the children. If you have the above set in place, your family will be able to survive this period, and you can just hope that it doesn’t last long.
