If there were a likelihood of a looming crisis, it would be wise to stockpile food commodities that could last you for a while since grocery stores could also shut down.
You don’t want to go begging for food from your neighbors or even strangers. If you stockpile the below foods, you will be able to survive the crisis with ease.
You certainly cannot live without water; water can help you survive without food for days, and that is why it should be the first thing in your list of foods to hoard. Stockpile enough clean water.
2. Canned liquids
Canned liquids like pineapple and vegetable juices will give you both nutrition and hydration at the same time. Also, buy canned coconut milk which will always help to cook your rice faster. You will also be able to substitute water with vegetable, chicken or even beef stock, so have it in stock.
3. Powdered milk
Since dairy products require to be refrigerated, stocking powdered milk is a good alternative. It will be great for the provision of both calcium and vitamin D.
In cases where getting fresh food is hard, multivitamins can come in handy. They will provide you with the required nutrients you might not be getting from food.
5. Apples and citrus fruits
Apples can last up to three months without refrigeration if stored in a cool, dry area from other perishable fruits which might make them ripen faster. Citrus fruits can go unrefrigerated for up to two weeks. They are a great source of vitamin c and will help keep you hydrated.
6. Peanut butter
If you are not allergic to peanut butter, it is a great commodity to hoard. It is packed with proteins, essential minerals and useful fatty acids that will help you survive longer without food. Buy natural peanut with no additives.
7. Energy bars
These are packed with high calories, proteins and, a range of nutrients that provide you with an instant energy boost. Also, incorporate chocolate bars as they are also packed with energy and calories to survive the day.
8. Dried meat
You can prepare your own dried meat by either smoking it or sun drying. You could also buy already dried meat.
Some people simply cannot function without taking a cup of coffee. It is great for giving you that kick you need when feeling exhausted. Coffee will also help boost your mood in the morning, and you could also trade it with another commodity during a crisis.
10. Canned vegetables
These will include peas, carrots, and green beans which are a great source of essential nutrients.

Consider fruits like apricots and raisins. These will provide you with much needed dietary fiber and potassium. Dried fruits contain high amounts of calories. Raisins are full of antioxidants and potassium. They also have proteins, iron, fiber, and vitamin C.
Include oils like olive, butter, and organic shortening. These will come in handy for cooking. Just ensure you get the ones with “virgin” word for more nutrition value. Even if your oil goes rancid, you can still use it as fuel.

Wheat flour is more nutritious when it has whole grains; so go for whole wheat flour. it is packed with minerals, fiber, protein, and vitamins. Wheat flour can also be used to thicken gravies or for coating.
Whatever cereal your family eats, stockpile it. These could include rice, oats, corn or even wheat based cereals like wheat germ. These are packed with numerous minerals, vitamins, and proteins. Corn can also be dried into flour to prepare cornmeal.
15. Crackers and cookies
You will get iron and niacin from crackers. Although they don’t have much nutrition value, you can use them as accompaniments to soups.
16. Rice and pasta
Consider choosing white rice because although brown rice is healthier, it takes longer to cook meaning it will deplete your cooking resources; it does not store well also. Since pasta has no fats or moisture content, it can last for a long period without spoiling. Pasta is the most filling and inexpensive foods.
Although nuts go rancid quickly, they are an excellent energy source. Consider stocking walnuts, almonds, and cashew nuts. Since most nuts are allergens, avoid giving them to children under the age of five. Always buy nuts packed in bags as they are the healthiest.
You can use honey to sweeten your cereal or teas. It also has antibacterial properties and can be used to soothe a sore throat. The best thing about it is that it never goes bad.
19. Iodized salt
Salt is useful for preserving food and also to kill bacteria. Salt is one of the most important commodities.
Apart from drinking it, you can use vodka for cooking or as a mouthwash to soon a painful tooth. It can also be used as an anesthetic.
