Have you ever thought of ways to survive if a mega drought ever happened?
A mega drought can last as long as several decades. If you live in a country that has experienced a mega drought before, then you have an idea of how long it lasted and its effects.
Global warming effects are one of the culprits of a mega drought. Sadly, no one can predict or even avert this crisis.
The only thing you can do is make sure you are always prepared for a mega drought if it were ever to happen. Being prepared means that you get information about a drought before it happens. Therefore, keep abreast of weather updates by the metrological department.
Below are five things that you could do to make sure that you are prepared to survive through this period:
1 . Forget the Lawn
Having a lush green lawn during the dry season doesn’t make any sense at all. In some homes, 50-80% of water is used for irrigating outdoor landscapes like a lawn. If you want your front yard to look good, plant drought resistant plants. In this way, you will be able to conserve water and reduce the chances of a drought. Encourage your neighbor to do the same, and you will all be in the process of averting a looming mega drought crisis. If you can afford it, an artificial lawn is a way to go. Your lawn will look awesome without investing a single drop of water.
2. Turn Your Water into a Sponge
This is another great way of surviving a mega drought. Turn your home into a sponge by always harvesting rain water. A lot of rain water goes to waste since most people don’t harvest it. Whenever the wet season starts, make sure you have made plans to store as much rain water as you can. In this way, when drought comes, you will always have enough water to drink.
3. Fix Your Leakage Problems
Leaky pipes are one of the problems that lead to water shortage. As soon as you detect a leaky pipe, fix or replace it immediately. Also, you could install smart pipes. These not only trace leakages but also generate energy whenever water flows through them. Likewise, storage tanks especially concrete and brick ones are notorious for developing cracks that result in leakages. As the saying goes; waste not, want not.
4. Rethink the Almond
Since there is already a water shortage, as a farmer chooses the crops, you grow wisely. Replace water-intensive crops like almond with drought resistant crops. This way you will be able to make money even when there is drought. The same rule should apply for field crops. Go for earlier maturing varieties of crops that have been specifically developed for dry areas. You will probably be able to get most appropriate varieties from a local agronomist.
5. Desalination for Quality Water
Before, there were no hopes of sea water getting desalinated. However, in the recent days, it has become easier to carry out the process. So if you live close to the sea, the idea is worth a try. The best thing is that you don’t have to worry about the costs because there are solar-powered and ocean-powered desalination technologies. This process will produce quality water for use.
6. Dig More Wells
Try and dig a well in your homes. Underground water sources are very efficient since you get water directly from the source. All you need is a small generator to pump the water. Rain water can also get collected in these wells raising the water levels. This way, when drought strikes, you will still have a source of water until the well dries up. The water from a well can also be pumped into a reservoir above to be used in time of shortage.
7. Use the Right Irrigation Methods
Some unconventional irrigation methods contribute to water wastage. Using a sprinkler for irrigation is one of them. So much water goes to waste especially when it is windy. Instead of such methods, try and use drip irrigation method which concentrates on the base of a plant. Collect water from drains and use it to water your plants. Also, to avoid evaporation, line the ground with appropriate polyethylene sheets like a dam liner.
In conclusion, a mega drought is just one of the vagrancies of nature for which we should always be prepared without panicking. We should also be proactive by playing our role in planting more trees and avoiding actions that worsen the condition such as wanton destruction of forests.

In rural areas in our country, some experience extreme drought. The farmers there are able to cope by changing their crops based on the weather they experience and it’s a smart way to sustain their bread and butter.
Digging wells to get underground water is a solution practiced here in Africa. It has worked for a lot of communities, even in areas where water is scarce. I would also appreciate taking steps to fix any water leakage problem. That is a must to conserve water. Keep writing good articles.
