Call it luck, chance, destiny, whatever– it’s everyone’s dream to possess that winning lottery ticket to fame and fortune!
Over the centuries that lotteries have been in existence, millions of people have won and lost, zillions of dollars have changed hands and lives have been transformed.
Is there really a strategy to winning a lottery?
The very question seems illogical, because “lottery” implies a random pick from a large number.
Yet, there are experts out there who have consistently won small and large fortunes, and insist that there are indeed secrets to winning.
Many of these experts have been generous enough to share their tips and tricks.
What Are Lotteries?
The word “lottery” is derived from the old English word “lot” which means “fate.” It is an ancient form of gambling that involves drawing numbers randomly for a prize/s. They’re deemed to have originated in ancient China between 205-187 BC, and were endorsed by the Han dynasty to fund public projects including the Great Wall. The Greeks, Romans and Celts had their own versions.
In the United States, a lottery organized under the aegis of King James I in 1612 provided the right to the Virginia Company of London to raise money for settlers to establish Jamestown the first English colony in the United States.
Today, many modern governments endorse lotteries for various public enterprises, charities and health-sector schemes. Prizes run into billions of dollars and the media regularly posts articles and pictures about lucky winners.
People play for various reasons. It’s quick and easy money that lands in your lap out of the blue. Lotteries help finance dreams of owning property, travel, education, charity or simply having enough spending money to go on a binge. For many, it’s a chance to join the charmed circle of the rich and famous, retire, to shine in their family groups or do the things they’ve only dreamed of.
Winning Strategies

One of the “luckiest” people in the nation: Richard Lustig of Orlando, FL, has won seven lottery grand prizes through a system he developed.
Most people play the lotteries in a purely random fashion. Or they may pick what they feel are lucky numbers based on their date of birth, numerology or astro predictions. However, several famous lottery winners have confided that they do have a system. It’s not just a hit-or-miss, haphazard exercise. Here are some of their secrets:
- Find the patterns: If you’ve been winning small sums or find yourself holding the winning ticket or lucky number consistently, start making notes. No matter how small or trivial the prize, keep a note of it. Try and analyze the patterns in these wins. Numbers, times, location, type etc.
- Play the right games: Remember “the lottery” isn’t just a single game – it’s a whole lot of different games, ranging from national lotteries to small neighborhood prizes. You could easily be earning a tidy packet by playing smaller lotteries that require smaller investments.
- Choose unusual numbers/combinations: Computer generated numbers, random selections, etc. Forget about birth-dates, your dog’s name in numbers, your social security number and the like. If you choose a date, remember that you’re restricting yourself 1-31. Spread the range wider.
- Buy more tickets: Elementary as it sounds, many people focus on buying that one big winner. Instead, spread your risk by buying more tickets. Joining a lottery-pool is a great idea – office, club, pub pools are very popular. They boost your chances of winning without breaking your personal budget.
- Check carefully: The media is full of horror-stories about people who mistakenly threw away a winning ticket. Maybe you weren’t wearing your glasses/were looking at the wrong results/had a migraine headache or hangover/were simply careless. Double-check the numbers after 10 minutes, ask someone to help you, switch on the bright lights and confirm.
- Second-chance games: Many state lotteries run second-chance draws. So wait before you trash your tickets.
- Pick up discards Many people throw their tickets away in frustration if they haven’t “won.” These could be second-chance winners, or maybe the person didn’t check the numbers correctly, looked at the wrong date, etc
- Protect yourself: Sign on the back of tickets immediately, with the date, time and where you purchased it. This helps if it gets lost or stolen. Don’t hand it over innocently to the clerk to verify – a crooked clerk can easily tell you it’s a loser and pocket it himself/herself. If you’re sending the winning ticket by mail, make sure you keep photocopies.
Conclusion
Winning or losing certainly has a huge element of luck. But you can increase your chances by being consistent, buying generously, spreading the risk, understanding the odds and knowing your limits. Just don’t get obsessed!
