There are several factors that could cause a total power grid failure. You don’t want to be caught in chaos with your family without knowing what to do next. Here is a look at the things you need to take into consideration when there is a total power grid failure:
A disruption in the equilibrium of both powers supplied and power that was drawn could trigger a line to trip leading to power cut off. This could be caused by extreme weather changes like a heat wave.
This can occur at the station, transformer level or the transmission line. Vandalized transformer will lead to a power cut off immediately.
Other criminal behaviors like cyber terrorism or even a nuclear pulse could also be the culprits. Huge electromagnetic storms or a change in the Earth’s magnetic field could also play a role in a total power grid failure.
Power grid failure is one of the most disasters that are likely to occur at one time in your life. When it happens, it could mean you stay without power for hours, days and even months. So how do you prepare yourself for such a crisis? There are essentials that you should prepare.
Since water gets pumped by electricity, a power grid failure could mean water shortage. Store enough water for each person in your family and ensure you can access clean water. If not have water filtration methods at hand. 1 gallon is enough for each member each day so if you know how long you will have to stay without power, get enough water for everyone including pets.
Stock up foods that don’t require refrigeration. Consider foods that don’t need cooking like dried food since cooking will require more fuel than just warming it. So, go for canned food instead.
Have alternative cooking means like camp stoves, fire pits or charcoal grills. This is because gas supply lines could also be affected. Ensure you have enough fuel supplies like firewood, charcoal or propane. Have manual can openers at hand too.
For hygiene purposes, ensure that you are well prepared for a power grid failure. Buy disposable tableware that doesn’t require washing. Also stock antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizers. Make sure you fill up your bathtub or buckets to use for bathing, laundry, and toilet flushing. If your toilet cannot flush without power, consider lining a bucket with a contractor bag and put kitty litter so that your family can use it as a toilet. Always have some baby wipes stocked.
Make sure you have the essentials like bandages, over the counter medicine that your family members use, and most importantly stock some anti- diarrhea medication due to the changed sanitation situation. Don’t forget that emergency services might be crippled and you have to administer first aid to a family member.
In a case of a power grid failure, some people may not be prepared for the outcome. You need to protect yourself from such people who try to loot from your home. Others may simply be burglars. Have a weapon with you to protect yourself and your family. The weapons could range from pepper spray to firearms. Make sure you know how to use them.
Since it will be impossible to have electric lighting sources, have other sources at hand. These include candles, flashlights, and headlamps. Also don’t forget to buy batteries, lighters, and matches to go with them. Have lanterns that can supply sufficient lighting to an entire room. Consider having solar chargers and glow sticks to light up hallways. If you can, buy a generator to provide backup power too.
Since cell phones and land lines cannot be relied on as modes of communication, it is advisable to have a crank radio. It will help you get information on what is going on around the world and can also be helpful for charging other devices.
In cold climates, the key to survival is to maintain heat. Lay towels along the bottom of your house doors and windows and huddle together.
Get an extra source of heat like a fireplace or a wood stove. Just ensure you have enough wood for the same. Build an upside-down fire that lasts longer since it is self-feeding.
For an overnight warming, you can go with heating rocks on fire and then place them in heat- safe cookware to provide heat all night long.
Always make sure you have a fire extinguisher at hand in the case you need it.
Make sure that everyone keeps warm by wearing warm clothing from head to toe and also have some warm blankets that can be easily accessed.
If you follow the above guidelines, you will be able to survive a total power grid failure with no difficulties.
