How Do I Secure My Home Against Intruders and Looters During a Crisis?

29. December 2016 By Frank Johnson 11 Comments

When facing a crisis, anyone including your best neighbor can turn into a bugler. It is therefore paramount to put as many warning signs as possible around your home. By so doing, you will be portraying that you are ready to use force to safeguard the safety of your properties which will scare looters off. Do the following are things to put in place to avoid bugler attacks during a crisis.

Have useful items for securing your home

Defending your home in an urban crisis survival plan is a wise move. You will be required to implement emergency plans to cover various activities such as evacuating, hiding and defending. Having these items will put you in a safer position: a guard dog, bear mace/pepper spray, guns and spray paint

It is recommendable to have a properly trained guard dog in readiness for a crisis. They require a little bit of investment, e.g., some money to buy its food which is worth it. They will scare off any intruder and alert you in case a footloose appears in your compound.

Pepper spray is a nonlethal weapon worth keeping with you. It will be of use in case of a burglar attack and will help you to defend your property well. The spray makes the looters to experience unforgettable excruciating pain which will change their plans and make them flee away.

Guns are essential for obvious reasons: defense and protection. Also, replicas come in handy when you wish to scare looters off. These are fake guns that are designed in such a way that they look like real rifles. They are cheap to buy, and you will not be forced to have a license to own one. The advantage is that 99% of all people are unable to distinguish real guns from replicas without close inspection.

Put in place simple fortifications

Using non-breakable Plexiglas to replace your glass windows is a great idea. If you do this, you will not be required to reinforce the window bars further with steel as using un-breakable Plexiglas plays a similar role. Most robbers break into the house through the windows. Therefore, put this measure in place to keep your commodities safe.

You can also opt to use heavy-duty deadbolts to replace your door locks. When looters attack your home and find Plexiglas windows, their next option will be to go for the door. When robust deadbolts are used, the intruders will have a tough time breaking into your premises. The following are other simple fortifications that can be made: building secret hiding place and use of steel doors and windows.

Make your dwelling place look unappealing

You should strive to make your house not to seem outstanding in the neighborhood. This might sound ridiculous but it helps as looters’ attention won’t be attracted. You should, however, understand that this doesn’t mean that you should trash the backyard or the windows. Keeping expensive stuff, e.g., furniture away from the window is a great move to make your home look unappealing during a crisis.

Do not put your goodies where everyone can see them

As earlier mentioned, keeping expensive electronics far from curious eyes will reduce the probability of plunderer attacks during any crisis. In most cases, looters reside near your homes. They will, therefore, do their best to know your household possessions if you are not careful.

Avoid letting people know that you are not at home

During, crisis, it will be a bad idea to notify people when you are leaving your home. This is quite obvious as you are not supposed to trust anyone during this period. If possible, you should invest in lighting system designed to sense motion. This will scare off looters.

Another crucial thing to do is to empty the mailbox when leaving home for some days. A piled up mailbox is a clear indication that you are away which will attract looters’ attention.

Conclusion

During a crisis, your safety and your properties’ safety should come first; you should under no any circumstances allow burglars to loot your belongings. Police officers can take long to respond during this period; therefore, follow the above techniques to secure your properties from intruders.

I agree on not telling others that your house is completely empty. Opening the lights or television/radio will give the intruders a signal that someone is inside the house.

Making one’s home look appealing for the win! Haha. That’sright. When there’s nothing appealing from a distance, looters won’t waste their time.

There was only one instance where our house was looted and it was back when it wasn’t fully furnished yet. Well nowadays we leave at least 2 lights on especially when we are not at home. We use Led bulbs so the electricity wouldn’t be so high.

One advice I will apply is to have a guard dog that is well trained to scare intruders. Avoid people knowing one is not at home during a crisis is also very important. It’s more likely intruders will want to break in if they know you are not at home.

Do not out your goodies where everyone can see is a good one. But you’d be surprised at how many people lack this common sense.

A replica gun might scare away rookie felons, but seasoned ones can see through your bluff with persistence. Trust me, you’re better off with a real gun in your home (just keep it hidden from your kids)
