The world has become an increasingly dangerous place. It is for this reason that everybody needs to come up with a strategy to ensure their safety as well as that of their loved ones. When under attack it is possible to panic and make stupid mistakes that will aggravate the situation. The following strategies can help you keep safe or even alive.
Be aware of your environment
Be alert as to who is around you. In particular, do not go to high-risk areas where drug traffickers, petty criminals, and hoodlums are known to hang out. You could get caught up in the midst of a gang fight. By the same token, if there is likely to be a demonstration that could turn violent, give it a wide berth. Do not give thugs hiding places by having shrubbery near your windows. On the streets avoid dark alleys or deserted car parks at night.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed. It is a good idea to discuss what to do as a family in case of an attack. Family members should know the signals used to alert one another of an attack. These could be a whistle, yell or another signal. A family could also have a hand or other hidden signal to launch a coordinated attack. It is also a good idea to enter a martial arts program to learn how to defend yourself. Some programs such as Krav Maga, are highly efficient in training one to use the available resources to attack.
Don’t create opportunity
This sounds obvious, but many people only come to realize that they made themselves an easier target for an attack after it has taken place. Leaving windows open and doors unlocked especially at night can make things easy for a burglar. Using security devices such as alarms or gills on windows can act as a deterrent to criminals. A neighborhood watch program is also very effective in securing your safety. An often overlooked weakness is exposure through social media. If you post pictures of your home and details of your family and their lifestyles, you could be providing information that could lead to attack. Some people even give out details of when and where they will be going on vacation only to come back and find their home robbed. Do not make yourself an easy target.
Do not resist unnecessarily
If you know what your attackers want and you are sure that if you give it to them, they will go away, then just give it to them. No property is equal to you or your family’s safety. It is not a time for heroics. However, if their intention is to cause you harm, then, a strategy based on aggression could be an option. This will depend on the number of attackers and how they are armed. Your priority should be your family’s safety rather than to fight the aggressors.
Try and talk to an attacker. If it is a group, talk to their leader or whoever seems the most reasonable. Make human contact by enquiring about their family, interests or any other topic that seems to be of interest. Talking buys you time, allows you to plan an escape and could even create a bond that will make an attacker less inclined to hurt you. You could even negotiate your way to freedom. If you make promises, remember that you are not obligated to respect them. Cooperation or submission is only a way to stay alive and is not consent.
Bide your time
Immediately you are under attack; it is advisable to wait for the attackers to lower their guard. At the beginning of the attack, the attackers are on high alert and are unlikely to be caught off guard. When an opportune opportunity to escape presents itself, it should be seized. The aim should be to move out of range of your attackers’ weapons and seek help.
Make a decisive move
If there is no chance for escape and the certainty for violence or injury is imminent, the only option is to fight. The first action should be to throw the attackers off balance. Throw anything that you can at an attacker. Aim for the eyes or head. If you can get a weapon, use it. If the attack is at home, use your superior knowledge of the house to escape or get weapons. A baseball bat, knife or even jar of pepper could turn the tables in your favor. If you are within striking distance, aim for weak spots such as the eyes, nose shin, groin or temple.
Finally, awareness and preparation will give you a vantage position to respond should you ever find yourself under attack.
