Training our dogs is a way of rewarding them. It is also a perfect means of bonding with them which facilitates a good relationship. It is a good idea to have a behaviorist help with the dog’s behaviors such as destructiveness, phobias and excessive barking. Below are some of the best means of training your dog for better results.
Give the puppy clear rules
It is important to start training your puppy from the first time it arrives at your place. Ensure that the rules that you are giving the puppy are clear and easy to follow. For instance, find appropriate means of restricting your puppy from accessing certain places in the house, e.g., by building gates. Also, never feed your young dog from a plate if you do not want it to be pleading for food at the table. Do not scold the puppy to ensure that its trust remains high.
Study your dog’s breed
Dogs that are not of the same breed are very different; it is; therefore, wise to learn more about your breed to ensure that you are training it appropriately. It is proven that trainings have vast differences when dealing with different dog breeds. Therefore, read up to ensure that you are doing the training appropriately.
Ensure that training sessions are as brief as possible
Each training session should be 10-15 minutes long. Also, make sure that you are keeping the sessions unique by incorporating new fun things, e.g., little games. Take a break immediately you see the dog bored, frustrated or distracted. End the session on a fine note by giving him rewards.
Basic commands to teach your dog
- Sitting – Training your dog how to sit down is one of the simplest tricks; in fact, everyone should start with this command. To achieve this, start by holding the treat close to the dog’s nose. Proceed to move your hand up ensuring that the dog is following the treat so that its bottom lowers. Once he’s sitting down, say “Sit” and offer the treat to the dog for appreciation. Repeat this trend for a couple of times until your dog masters it. Ask him to sit down every time he’s having his meal or in any other situations.
- Come – The primary aim of this command is to keep your dog out of trouble. Also, it can be used to bring your dog back once you lose track with him or when you do not wish to let him out of the house. It is straightforward to teach this command to your dog if you are wondering how to go about it. Simply put a collar and a leash on him, then go down and say “Come” to him as you are gently pulling that leash. Reward the dog after complying with the order. Continue training him until he has mastered the order and progress to training it outdoors and without the
- Stay – The command can only be taught to a dog after teaching him the ‘sit’ command. All you have to do is to tell him to stay while opening your palm in your frontage. After this, take several steps behind you and reward him if he stays. Increase the steps gradually before giving your dog the treat. The command may take longer to be mastered; this should not discourage you, however.
- Leave it – The command is aimed at keeping your dog safe especially when he is curious. During this training, the trainer should teach the dog to ignore other things that might be dangerous and intriguing. Place two treats in all your hands and show the dog an enclosed fist containing a treat and tell him to leave it. Ignore when the dog tries to sniff, leak or bark trying to access the gift. After he ceases from trying, give him the other treat (from another hand.)Repeat this until the dog is obedient and leaves the first gift as soon as you say “Leave it.” Consistent training will make your dog more obedient and will bring forth better results.
The above techniques used to train your dog are very workable and will make him compliant when you give him commands. Ensure that you are using treats to appreciate your dog once he’s obedient. The training should be done on a regular basis for better results.
