Tricks For Saving Battery On Your Smartphone

10. September 2016 By Frank Johnson 10 Comments

Phones have become like personal computers with all the functionality they offer. These computing abilities and the processing power, however, come at a cost. As much as users expect more from their phones, battery manufacturers have not made any effort to improve their longevity.

It is for this reason that everyone should know how to increase their battery lives to get the most out of them. Thinner phones with less room for batteries and the fast processors are some of the factors contributing to the decreasing battery longevity. Below are some ways you can save your battery:

Disable auto synchronization
This option operates in the background draining both your data and battery. Select which apps you want to sync and at what intervals manually.

Dim your screen
Using too much brightness on your screen could be one of the culprits killing your battery. If you are especially in darker rooms, always dim your screen brightness to save your battery. Lower your phone display brightness to the lowest level you can comfortably work with.

Install Ad-free apps
Ads can be very frustrating especially when they keep popping up on your screen. The worst part is that they wreak havoc on your battery. Consider an ad-free app or upgrade your app altogether.

Adjust the screen timeout
This option tells the phone how long to stay awake after a period of inactivity. The longer your phone stays awake, the faster the battery drains. Set the shortest time possible for your phone to sleep.

Use 2G internet
Using 3G or 4G networks drains your battery faster than when using 2G. With 2G, you will still be able to access EDGE network and even Wi-Fi if need be.

Switch unnecessary hardware radio off
With the latest smartphones, it has become easier to share your location with GPS. This is the biggest battery drain. Always switch it off when not needed. Your Wi-Fi radio is always looking for connections as some apps are set to update via Wi-Fi.

Switch off Bluetooth
When not using Bluetooth on your phone, always switch it off. Bluetooth radio is always listening to surrounding signals thus increasing your battery usage.

Avoid the vibrate option
Having your phone alert you of an incoming call or message by vibration may seem modest, but vibration drains your battery faster than having a ringtone. You should consider turning off notifications and keeping your phone at an arm’s length where you can see an incoming call. This way you will not only be courteous but also save your battery life.

Reduce Apps running in the background
Go to Settings > Apps and view all the running apps. If there are some app you are currently not using yet they are running, stop them.

Discard unnecessary home screen widgets
Some people have so many widgets on their home screens that the screens look like Christmas trees. If you don’t use a widget frequently, just remove it from the home screen because it continuously carries out poll status updates in the background. You should also eliminate live wallpapers.

Use power saving mode
With the energy saver mode, it reduces your device performance, limits background data, vibration and all the location services thus increasing the battery life.

Use a black background
With AMOLED phones, use a black background. AMOLED screens only illuminated colored pixels but with black pixels, less power will be required to light hem thus saving battery life.

Update your apps
Always keep your Apps up to date. The reason developers continuously update them is to help optimize your battery and memory.

Always check the signal strength
Being in an area with poor reception could mean disaster to your battery life. The phone will try to work even harder to get a stronger signal which means that your battery gets overworked. You can choose to put your phone on flight mode or just switch it off altogether.

Browse the internet wisely
As mobile traffic continues to increase, it should be noted that cell service uses more battery power than Wi-Fi. If you happen to be in a Wi-Fi zone, opt for that option rather than the cell service. However, always switch off your Wi-Fi while not using it.

Buy a better battery or a battery case
Battery cases protect your phone with a hardware enclosure increasing your battery life. Also look for reviews on batteries and buy the best lithium-ion battery.

Since these smartphones are here to make our lives simpler, saving the battery is mandatory. To maximize your battery life, you need to minimize your power use.

Nowadays, you can also find battery juice packs (like those from Mophie or Apple’s smart battery case) that both protect and charge your smartphone. This dual-purpose case could be a lifesaver when your phone dies on you before the day ends.

Thought I’d share that one. 🙂

Apps running on the background shortens batter power. I wasn’t aware before that the apps are still running although the apps are not open.

The thing with my phone is that it sometimes drains power really fast or drains power very slow. It is very strange.

These are some very useful tips and I came to your page at the right time as I am having some serious battery issues with my new phone. Since I have to connect through hotspot for using data at my workplace which doesn’t have Wi-fi facility my battery power drains quickly and I am thinking of buying a power bank. Would you suggest some good brands in your next article maybe? Thanks for the wonderful tips. I will have them in my mind and use it wisely.
